Drive Belt Life

Post by dlmoore75 » Tue Sep 12, 2017 1:48 am

How long does original drive belt last? In my cases it broke at 15,155 miles. Had to push home in rain. Good workout. Plan on the next change at 12-15k interval.

My Handbook says change @ 15,000 miles...
My scoot has done 14,500 - and squeaking like a seal lion when pulling away now and again...
Got a new belt and 16g Dr pulleys (currently have 15g fitted!) on the shelf ready for the 15k mile service - Belt & Rollers / Engine and Gear oil Change / Brake caliper and pad check n clean possible pad replace / Air Filter clean - swap (have some Ram Air Filter Foam cut to fit the OE air filter panel with the paper folded element cut out...)

With my XMax400 (Majesty Engine) Manual says Belt @ 12,000 - measured and still in spec at 23,000!...
Gonna change at 24,000 - think I've had my monies worth!

The Factory Service Manual also recommends a change @ 15,000 miles and I adhere to that.
Probably is dependent upon what kind of animal is trying to twist the throttle off the bar and the 'Factory' assumes a worse-case scenario.

My last belt appeared to have a lot-of-Life left on her yet; as I am 'tender' with the throttle (most of the Time) as I 'feel' the connection between my ears, through my arm to my hand, through the entire bike all the way to its contact with precious Earth and can sense the 'point' when everything is in best harmony for the constantly changing presented conditions and my darling She is most happy and want to prance (or so I think).

Like doing the waltz in one of those classic Russian films such as "Anna Karenina":

....or better yet within the most expensive movie EVER made → "War and Peace"(1965)....an epic 7+ hour film; where they were able to 'use' 20,000 troops from the Russian Army (for FREE!) ALL dressed and mounted 'to period' in order to film the Napoleonic war scenes in the most amazingly realistic manner... NO pathetic CGI for these hearty lads in Holy Russia!......

Imagine: Due to the immensity of the 'scene' it had to be shot in ONE 'take'!!!!!!!

Change your belts at 15,000 miles and dance on.

I've only had my SH for a month, but the records show that the belt was changed at 18,000 miles or 600 miles before I bought it.

@Tommy: you lost me when you started about russian movies, but that happens more often  ;)

I just replaced mine on the SH300 at 28,500km as a precaution. The old belt looked in good condition but I guess its hard to tell from appearance ?

On the SH150 I follow the factory recommendation and change it at 15,000 miles (24000KM), and yeah, the old still looks serviceable.....Better safe than sorry with that critical drive component me thinks.....

I agree. Honda's engineers know what they are doing when they write the recommendations for service intervals.

I change my belt w/sliders at 10,000 miles because I can. People may think that stop n go wears out a belt fastest. It's the spring pressure from the driven pulleys (Contra Spring pressure) at high speed along with high temps that wears belts fastest.

I agree with you, but my drive belt is broken in at 20,000 miles. I don't see anything, just change it as soon as possible.
